Partner: Shanghai Nanhuizui/Fengxian Beach
For HandsOn Shanghai, we believe that for change to take place, aeareness and tangibility of issues servesas the foundation for action, so beginning in 2014, HandsOn Shanghai has mobilized volunteers to clean up local beaches in Shanghai.
A mobilization that we hoped would raise awareness for ocean and marine life protection, and ultimately reduce damage to the marine environment,
and over the last 5 years more than 5000 volunteers participated in 105 beach clean-ups at Shanghai’s local beaches,
to help protect the marine environment, enhance environmental awareness, and promote community service concept.
Achievements to date: 225+ km beach site 220,800+ pieces trash 35,900+ kg trash
5000+ volunteers mobilized 35,500+ volunteer hours
With the challenge itself only continuing to grow,
and by some estimates it is possible that there will be more trash in our oceans than fish by 2050, HandsOn Shanghai is now looking to triple our effort at the beaches and make significant investments in awareness campaigns focused on behavioral change.
Be it through the change of consumer habits, and reduction of waste creation, or through community awareness and cleanup campaigns aimed at communities taking responsibility for litter.
