June marks a vibrant season, so does Abbvie’s volunteering activities in this month. For the Week of Possibilities action, Abbvie engaged volunteers across Beijing, Chengdu and Guangzhou, brought exciting science discovery course into local migrant schools, hoping to help students develop interest in the science world, as well as improve their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Beijing
Chenguang Cerebral Palsy Rehabilitation Center
On June 5th, volunteers from Abbvie came to Beijing Chenguang Cerebral Palsy Rehabilitation Center, where they had enjoyed a meaningful afternoon with children there.
When you hear “Cerebral palsy”(CP), you might relate it to a kind of mental disability. However, CP is actually a physical disability caused by brain injury. People with CP have varying degrees of inability to control their muscles. The children in Chenguang also encounter many challenges as they are not able to run or walk just as other kids do. This time, Abbvie volunteers brought them with a fun hands-on experience—making handmade soaps.
With volunteers’ guidance and support, these children were able to have a very different experience that they would have never got before. And for Abbvie volunteers, they’ve got a better understanding of this special group and realized how to respect them in a proper way.
People with cerebral palsy, as well as other kind of disabilities deserve equal respect and right to pursue happiness in life. Thanks for all the participated volunteers, your love made this day a special moment for these kids!
Chengdu ELDU Primary School Goes to the New Space Center
On June 7th, Abbvie volunteers brought a special course for the students from Chengdu ELDU Primary School.
What’s special for the course? A customized learning model designed for our children! Abbvie SEEK Program is designed to introduce students to the nature of science and engineering through fun, participatory activities. This time, students would take challenge to build a strong box which can carry eggs and protect them from being cracked. Students and volunteers divided into small groups, through brain storm and collaboration, each group designed their own unique carrying box. Children gained a lot through this practice, from which they learned how to do team work, turn their idea into practical object, as well as improve their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Abbvie volunteers also enjoyed a lot accompanying these young engineers. Their support opened a window to a new world that has a lot potential for these young folks. Thank you all Abbvie volunteers! You’ve been a wonderful spark for these students and we believe this inspiration will go further!
Guangzhou
Kang Le Primary School
The exciting wave of SEEK Program is still going on. This time, Abbvie volunteers brought this vibrant course into Kang Le Primary School in Guangzhou.
After a short orientation, students and volunteers were grouped into 7 teams. They would accomplish a task together—design a strong box to carry and protect eggs. With various tools like scissors, tapes, foam plastics ahead, students can’t wait to put them into their specially made project. For the winning team, their box should not only be sturdy, but also be sustainable (use least materials). Each group produced their unique box, through which we could see students’ wonderful imagination and creativity.
Thanks for all the Abbvie volunteers spending this meaningful day with the migrant students. Your support and care made them realize the various possibilities in the science, and also in their life!
