2013 HandsOn Shanghai Team Leader and Education Volunteer Recruiting

I. Team Leader Recruitment:

Programs:

- Sunshine Home Mentally Challenged People (Xinhua Block, Xinzhuang)
- Elderly Care Centers: Xuhui, Xinzhuang, Hongmei, Fahua, Huangpu
- Homeless Shelter Center

Requirements:

- Be friendly and helpful, love to do volunteer work
- promise to be a team leader for at least 6 months on weekdays or weekends (depending on the program)
- Commit to 2 events per month for 6 months (2-3 hours per month)
- Attended the same program at least five times
- Volunteers with HandsOn Shanghai experience preferred
- Volunteers with project management and group management experience preferred
- Fluent in Chinese
- Has to take part in several HOS trainings

Responsibilities:

- Coordinate the volunteer activity, including ice-breaker game, briefing and debriefing
- Divide the tasks of the activity to the different volunteers
- On-site management and guidance
- Keep in contact with HandsOn Shanghai and give us your feedback
- participate in the designing and planning of the activities

II. Education Volunteer Recruitment:

1. Reading Club Project

Since 2009 HandsOn Shanghai has been organizing a Reading Club for migrant school children every semester. The volunteers are the Reading Club teachers and teach the children the joy of reading and improve the students’ interest in reading. Through this club children get the opportunity to experience more literature and the charm of texts and language.
Time: Starting in March, every two weeks, Saturday morning from 9:30-11:30
Place: Wenhe Primary School, Minhang District, Pujiang Town

Requirements:
- Like children and reading
- Class management and teaching experience preferred
- at least attend three classes per semester out of six classes in total

Responsibilities:
- use all kinds of materials to design interesting and new reading club classes
- work in the team with the other volunteer teachers, take over the role of main teacher or assistant teacher
- prepare the class, design activities and prepare materials

2. Photograph Teachers for Shutterbug Club

The project aims to teach migrant students using digital camera to capture beauty in life. Since 2008 different photographer groups and people who love photography have been creating photography activities for migrant school children. This program has been successfully in effect for 7 semesters already and we have also held 3 very successful photography exhibitions with the pictures the migrant school children took.

Requirements:
A. Teaching photography volunteers
- design photography class for migrant school children
- class management and teaching experience preferred
- has advanced skills in photography and experience
- Have to participate in at least three classes per semester out of six in total

B. Outing event photography volunteer
- help taking pictures for HandsOn Shanghai events, conduct simple editing
- must have photography skills
- should have relatively high quality photography equipment
- no fixed time, volunteers will be contacted according to need

3. English Teaching Project

The aim of this project is to give the migrant school children a completely new experience of learning English. The volunteers let the students through interesting and vivid activities experience an authentic English accent in a relaxing atmosphere and thus stimulate their interest in the English language and their potential as well as improve their self-confidence in speaking English.
Time: Start: March; weekly, Saturday afternoon 1pm-3pm
Place: HandsOn Shanghai Volunteer Center, Minhang District

Requirements:
- Like children and good English language abilities
- class management and teaching experience preferred
- English teachers need to be able to attend every class in one semester
- Teaching assistants need to be able to attend class 5 times per semester

Responsibilities:

Design English class for migrant school children
Prepare classes and teaching material
Take over role of main teacher or assistant

4. Ivy Green – Vocational Development Class for Migrant Teenagers

This is a new program which started in 2012. It is a vocational and personal development program for teenagers of migrant worker families. The program has now started in a school in Yangpu District and the students are in 9th grade age 15 to 18 years. They will graduate in 2013 and part of them will go to a vocational college, part of them will go back home and another part might directly enter the society and find some work.
Time: Start: March; every Friday from 1pm-3pm
Place: Yangpu District Liaoyang Middle School

Requirements:

- Time commitment: must be able to attend class almost every Friday
- Must be patient and devoted, must be willing to accompany those teenagers in their personal growth

Responsibilities:

- One-on-one training class with 25 students in total
- There will be lots of group activities during the classes, so the volunteers have to guide and assist the students
- Observe the student’s behavior, mood and emotions during the activities and give in time feedback
- Be a good role model for those teenagers, have a positive influence on their personal behavior and development

5. Translator and Proofreading Volunteers

Requirements:
- Translating volunteers: excellent Chinese and English language skills
- English proofreading volunteers: English native speakers

Responsibilities:
- Preferably have some translating and proofreading experience
- Help HandsOn Shanghai translate or proofread when there is a need
